What a verification badge actually means
A badge on this site is a record of named checks on a named date. It is deliberately a small claim, because the large one — that a company will do good work in your home — is not something any directory can honestly make.
What we check
Service capability
The provider states which of the three capabilities it performs — inspection and testing, remediation, or independent clearance — and we record them separately. A capability is never inferred from a related one.
Coverage
The provider confirmed it serves the areas shown for the services shown. A location page is empty rather than padded when nothing is verified there.
Licensing where a licence exists
Where a state issues a licence for the work, we record the licence number the provider supplied and the date we saw it. Many states issue none; where that is the case, the profile says so rather than implying a licence exists.
Every badge on a profile links to what was checked and the date it was checked. If a check is out of date, the badge says so rather than quietly standing.
Three capabilities, never one category
Inspection and testing, remediation, and independent clearance are three different jobs with three different reasons to hire someone. They are stored separately, shown separately, and routed separately — a request for clearance never becomes a remediation lead.
A firm that both remediates and tests is not automatically independent. A profile shows the capabilities the provider actually holds and lets you draw the conclusion.
A stated preference, and how far it goes
Rachel is a member of the Healthy Building Alliance, and when two companies both fit a job, we would rather send it to one that is part of that community. So we do — a verified, current membership adds a small, fixed amount to a company’s position in the results, the same weight as a reviewed credential and less than how close they are to you. It can settle a tie. It cannot get a firm past whether it does the work, whether it travels to you, or whether it is independent of the remediation.
Membership of a community is not a licence, a certification, or a guarantee of anyone's work. Where a listed company holds one, we have reviewed a document showing it, and it is one modest factor in ordering results — never a substitute for the licences and insurance a job actually requires.

No. Verification is a record of specific checks on a specific date. It is not an endorsement, it does not rank one provider above another, and it does not guarantee workmanship, timeliness, or price.
From the provider's own stated capabilities. A firm that performs both remediation and testing is not independent for verifying its own work, and its profile shows both capabilities rather than an independence badge. Independence is never inferred.
Listing and coverage eligibility are never affected by payment. Where a placement is sponsored, the label sits beside the listing title, and a sponsored listing still has to be eligible for the service and the area to appear at all.
Tell us what happened and we will record it against the profile and re-run the identity and capability checks. We do not publish reviews we cannot attribute to a real, verifiable customer of that provider.
Because nothing has been verified there yet. An empty result is the honest answer; filling it with providers who do not cover the area, or do not perform the service, would waste the visitor's time and the provider's.
